Do you want the freedom to be creative? I find cleaning up helps. Now I know the favorite sayings are creativity is messy, my craft room isn’t messy I just have everything on display, etc. But, and yes I am challenging that, do you know that your brain cannot process that mess. By saying, oh but I know where it all is. Just means you are taking up energy and brain power that could and would be creating! Not to mention time of unearthing that piece of paper or vinyl that is under 3 stacks of other unrelated things. We do make messes when we craft and create. I am saying you can be MORE creative, if you take the “un-fun” time to also clean up and get organized.

There is Freedom in Organization.

So if you want OFF your hamster wheel of organizing and then making a mess that will only take days if not weeks to clean up, I want you to listen really carefully here. You need a WHY, not a what or a how. This is a video of a 18 min Ted talk by Simon Sinek from 2010 that is not only incredibly insightful about business but we can extrapolate it so easily into our personal goals. Go watch it, I’ll wait…..

Simon Sinek Why How What Ted Talk

I am sure you are rolling your eyes at me going, Andrea, I simply cannot be a clean crafter! Well I am not asking you to be. I am asking you to take your Why from January 1 and make it a core part of who you are, so come Jan 1 of next year or the year after, you have moved on to more creativity and life goals.

My Why

I want to share my “why” with you. It’s fairly simple. I feel calm, controlled and creative when my space is clean, functional and organized. For me, mess equals stress. Stress means anxiety, anxiety means not enough room in my life for creativity. Why do I clean up and get organized? I want to be creative. Creativity is freedom. While freedom comes in many forms, we are “given” freedom by our government, parents, etc. What we need to realize is that being organized gives us the freedom to be creative. It frees up brain space in order to let our imagination flow and to be able to focus on what is important to us and not the stuff around us. It also gives us back time we aren’t searching or unearthing our mess for a specific product.

Now that’s heavy for a Monday. But I want to breakdown a couple questions to ask yourself before you get started OR so you can maintain what you have already done.

Question 1

What motivated me to clean up my space?

Question 2

What time, energy and effort do I want to devote to this project?

Question 3

Why do I let my space get so bad before I clean it or organize it?

Question 4

How do I feel with a clean and functional space?

Question 5

How important is it to me to maintain this goal?

These questions can help you figure out WHY you are getting organized. And then you can dive in to thinking about things like do you prefer open or closed storage? So I cannot wait to hear your true Why on getting organized!

  • I get organized to be able to find things more quickly. To spend less money buying something I already had but didn't know I had because I wasn't organized and couldn't find it. To spend less time looking and more time crafting and having fun. I want to spend the time and energy needed to get may work area purged of the unnecessary...no but I might use it....when in 5 yrs. and you let it keep you cluttered till that one perfect day...not going to happen. After that I want to spend 10-15 min after a project finishes to clean up my mess so it is not there tomorrow when I want to start something new. Why do I let it get so bad...because I feel like I've had enough fun so I have to move on to dishes, laundry, fixing supper, spending time with hubby. All important but so am I. If I take the time now, it will not be a mountainous task later. I feel good about myself and my space when it is done! I want to maintain this goal and will put what I said into practice....so I can type and words flow but now to put it into action.

    • You are worth it! And it will keep your creativity up and going! I’m so happy you are working to clean up your space and keep it clean!! Great job!
