Utility Cart Review

July 8, 2019 By Andrea Leave a Comment

Have you seen the carts that everyone seems to be carrying these days? They are essentially 3 bins on wheels. You can now get them in endless colors and a few varying sizes. I believe Ikea as the original creator and since they have taken off like crazy.
These carts are incredibly functional BUT not for everything. I have found they are great for storing items and crafts you don’t use constantly, or if you short on space. What they aren’t necessarily great for, is using them in place of a desk, table or more stable piece. You see a lot of people “hacking” them by flipping over the top bin and putting something on them. I can tell you right now, you can’t sew or run your small 3-d press on them, they just aren’t stable enough. So really what can you do? Storage. These are great for storage, items you don’t need immediate access too or your “lesser” (read as in I haven’t accumulated enough of it yet to warrant its own full time space) hobbies.
Michael’s has these carts (as well as pretty much everyone these days), theirs in the one pictured, and what I like is that you can buy a lid for them. That gives you a potential work surface, but I find its better just to keep the top bin closed and/or setting something on top of it.
I utilize 2 of these carts in my craft storage and my office. One I setup for my “lesser” hobby of sewing. The other is a bit of a roaming item. It has held electronics, paints, projects. I keep it relatively fluid so that if I am working with a new hobby that I do not have a direct spot for in my work space I can load it up and use it as long as I need too.
These carts are definitely useful and have their place, but don’t just run out and buy 5 of them assuming you will use them. What I love is they are compact and efficient, they offer great storage on wheels and it’s easy to find low cost accessories to improve them. On the other side I find they aren’t super stable for using beyond storage or placing things on them, so I don’t see it being a replacement to a good desk or your dining room table.
Hopefully that helps you decide if you these carts will be useful in your space, for your items.
